Approximately 50 automobiles have been covered with what seems to be human blood in the Germany's municipality of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, as reported by authorities.
Automobiles, exterior walls and mailboxes were marked, in some cases with prohibited symbols, they reported in a statement.
Law enforcement state they were contacted late on Wednesday night, when a resident discovered that a vehicle in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been covered with a red-colored fluid.
The substance had been applied in the pattern of a Nazi symbol, they stated.
Law enforcement then discovered multiple other smeared automobiles and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.
Nazi symbols are banned in Germany under legislation banning the public display of symbols from the Nazi era.
Law enforcement state preliminary tests indicate the substance was likely human blood.
"There is still no lead as to its source; authorities are presently not aware of any physical harm in connection with the event," they added.
Municipal representatives stated they were attempting "to unravel the mystery" and have appealed to the public for information.
A high-ranking official stated the incident rendered him without words and needed to be resolved promptly.
"This event strikes at the very heart of Hanau and reawakens the wounds of the right-wing violent incident half a decade ago," he stated on online, recalling the murder of nine victims by a gunman targeting individuals of foreign heritage in five years prior.
