Information Available Regarding the Fatalities of the Bondi Beach Shooting
A minimum of 16 lives lost their lives and more than 40 were hurt when gunmen fired on a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach, an attack Australian police are describing as a terrorist attack.
According to the most recent information, authorities have stated the number of fatalities remains at 16, including one of the alleged gunmen. Furthermore, 42 injured people were transported to medical facilities.
The victims have not yet been publicly named, but authorities state their ages are from 10 and 87 years of age.
Listed are the victims who have been identified so far.
Eli Schlanger
Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.
Known as a father-of-five, he was the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and acquaintances spoke of him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.
“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative asked.
Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their youngest child in October.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, according to his wife.
She told the events leading up to the attack, stating they were standing when the shooting erupted. “He pushed his body up because he wanted to stay near me,” she recalled.
The husband and wife were both Holocaust survivors, having experienced immense hardship in their youth. They had later relocated to Australia from Ukraine.
Dan Elkayam
The French foreign ministry have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.
Publicly, a senior official expressed that France mourned with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This cowardly attack is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must put a stop to,” the statement read.
One Child
A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the a children's hospital succumbed to her injuries, according to police reports.
One Israeli Citizen
An Israeli citizen was a fatality during the attack, according to reports citing the Israeli foreign ministry.
Those Injured
Of the 42 people taken to hospital, a significant number remain under care, with a number in a critical state. The injured include two police officers who attended the scene.
A casualty is a bystander who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the gunmen. Described as a local hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Sources state he was wounded and is receiving treatment in hospital.
He wrote, he described the incident as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the actions of those who came to assist. He said he believed it was a “miracle” he survived.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the shooting. He told reporters he heard “dozens and dozens” of shots.
“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I’ve been shot myself. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
