Manchester United Set to Sign German Striker Lea Schüller from Bayern Munich
The Women's Super League club are on the verge of completing the signing for prolific German striker Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Major Signing for United
Schüller, who has six months left on her contract, is known as a consistent goalscorer for her club and the national team. She has scored more than 100 goals for the German giants and scored 54 times in 82 appearances for Germany. Her arrival will be seen as a marquee signing for the Women’s Super League team.
Departure from Munich was expected since she appeared to be fighting back tears while applauding the German club’s fans following a victory over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
It was reported in late December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was losing one of its leading forwards. According to multiple sources, the formalities for the transfer are now finalised.
Reliable Goal Threat to Boost United's Attack
The 28-year-old’s arrival should represent a major boost to United’s attacking options. Schüller has been highly reliable in front of goal in Germany’s top flight.
- For seven straight seasons, including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She claimed the top scorer award in the 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Gathering Steam at Old Trafford
The acquisition of the German international comes at a time when United appear to be gathering positive momentum.
Recent performances feature qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a victory in the League Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the mid-season window has brought additional activity:
- The signing of Swedish defender Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The new deal for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who has become fan favourite since arriving in 2023.
Regarding the midfielder's extension, a senior figure commented: “Miyazawa is now a vital component to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and skill allows her and the team to control and dictate play from the middle of the park.”
Lundkvist, who has arrived from a club in the NWSL, said: “You can sense how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, competing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and performing in the top European competition.”
