New Year's Partygoers Advised to Dress Warmly with Snow Forecast Throughout the UK
Meteorologists are reporting an icy start to the new year, with snowfall anticipated throughout a lot of the UK. Revelers are being urged to dress warmly as near-freezing temperatures are expected for New Year's Eve.
Festive Celebrations Go Ahead Despite Warnings
Edinburgh's famous Hogmanay festivities are expected to take place, unlike last year's cancellation. This comes despite yellow warnings for snow across northern Scotland.
"A chilly New Year's Eve evening for those partying, so extra layers will be needed," said the national forecaster.
Fireworks Under Open but Chilly Skies
Elsewhere in the UK, the weather is likely to be ideal for fireworks celebrations, with a lack of precipitation and clear skies. Temperatures are expected to be low, so additional clothing a necessity, said forecasters.
To the north, conditions will be cloudier, but this is not anticipated to impact visibility for viewing fireworks. "We are not looking at low cloud, mist or murk, so you ought to be able to see fireworks, just not stars," commented one forecaster.

Moving into Friday, snow alerts are in place for Northern Ireland and extending from Wales, across parts of the north-west, the West Midlands and all the way to London and the majority of the south-east of England.

The Mercury Forecast to Plummet Further
As 2026 begins, it will be "frosty everywhere where you are," stated forecaster Simon Partridge. Conditions are expected to drop further as snow and gale-force winds are likely to affect the north of the country.
Around 10cm of snow could accumulate to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the highest roads and hills.
Health Warnings Released
At the same time, serious cold weather health warnings have been issued for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to stay active until noon on 5 January, with readings forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C.
