NY Introduces Online Platform for Citizens to Submit Immigration Videos After Arrests of Four US Citizens
New York state attorney general has launched a recent online portal encouraging citizens to submit images and footage of ICE operations throughout the state. This action comes just a day after a significant ICE raid shook Manhattan's Chinatown, sparking widespread demonstrations.
American Citizens Detained During Enforcement Action
A lawmaker revealed during a news conference that four US citizens were taken into custody and kept for "almost a full day" following Tuesday's raid. Protests occurred in NYC on consecutive evenings.
"All New York residents is entitled to reside free from terror," the attorney general stated in a announcement.
"If you witnessed and documented federal operations recently, I ask you to submit that footage with the authorities. We are committed to examining these submissions and determining any violations of law."
Submission Process
The portal includes options to upload visual evidence of the incident, along with a field to note location information. Prior to sending, submitters must mark a checkbox that states that "authorities could utilize any evidence provided in a legal proceeding, including in a legal proceeding or official statement."
Details of the Chinatown Raid
The Manhattan operation, which observers say involved more than 50 government officers, took place in a famous neighborhood of Manhattan where imitation handbags, accessories, jewelry and other goods are sold daily in large quantities – often to visitors.
Videos of Tuesday's raid depict multiple covered and weaponized federal agents restraining and arresting a man, and forcing aside onlookers. Throngs of locals trailed the agents along the roads. An military-style transport was noticed moving along the city streets.
Official Reactions
At a Wednesday press conference featuring the immigrant advocacy group, the congressman, a Democrat, said that four US citizens were detained by ICE for about 24 hours and that there were "no situations where four American citizens should be arrested for no reason." He said the persons were freed on the following day with no charges filed.
"The intent is obvious here. It is not focused on deporting lawbreakers," he stated. "This is a militarized effort to create conflict. It is simply a justification to provoke conflict for this administration to utilize the troops to stop conflict that they initiated."
Extensive Outcry
Outrage over the ICE raid rapidly grew – all three political contenders condemned the incident, as did the state leader.
"Yet again, the Trump administration opts for heavy-handed tactics that generate terror, rather than security. It has to end," one mayoral candidate stated.
NYC advocacy organizations expressed outrage also.
"Federal officers descended on Manhattan's Chinatown with armored transports, covered personnel and tactical gear to target street vendors attempting to earn income. This operation had no relation to public safety and was entirely about terrorizing immigrant families and communities," said the president of a rights organization.
Official Guidelines
Agency rules bans the holding of citizens and the organization has claimed it does not arrest or detain citizens. Nevertheless, external research has revealed that more than 170 US citizens have been detained unlawfully by federal agents since the beginning of the existing leadership.
Recent Pattern
Enforcement actions have been cropping up increasingly in New York and across the US this year.
A recent action in the city center was the first known raid on an immigrant shelter of the current administration. Protests against federal operations are commonplace along with accusations of violence and abusive practices.
Recently, a letter submitted by civil rights groups claimed healthcare failures of expectant mothers in ICE facilities.
