U.S. actor and playwright Jeremy O Harris, renowned for the Tony-nominated production Slave Play, was detained in November at an international terminal in Japan on allegations involving trying to bring in controlled substances into the country, officials announced.

Details of the Airport Incident

The 36-year-old was intercepted on 16 November at Naha airport, located on Okinawa, after a border inspection agent found 0.78 grams of a crystal material laced with the synthetic narcotic MDMA in his personal bag, according to a customs spokesperson.

He was immediately arrested on suspicion of breaching Japan’s stringent Narcotics and Psychotropics Control Act.

Regional customs officials filed a criminal accusation with the public prosecutor to initiate formal charging proceedings against the individual.

Current Status and Judicial Counsel

A police official in Tomigusuku, Okinawa, verified that Harris remains in custody. The official did not elaborate on whether Harris has acknowledged the allegations.

At this time, it is not known whether the artist has secured legal representation in Japan. Requests for comment to his representatives were not immediately returned.

Travel Itinerary and Location

Authorities stated Harris had traveled to Okinawa for tourism, journeying from Britain with a layover in Taiwan. Okinawa is a popular resort destination south-west of Tokyo, known for its beaches and military installations.
