Australian rugby league's authority has announced that athletes who sign with the “breakaway” R360 will be banned for a decade.

R360, set to start in 2026, is aiming to attract players from union and league with substantial agreements and a slimmed-down playing schedule.

Top rugby league stars have reportedly been approached by R360, which will involve six or eight men's sides and women's teams based in large metropolitan areas worldwide.

Representing Samoa the player, who is with New Zealand Warriors in the league, has confirmed he has had discussions with the breakaway league.

Papenhuyzen, Lomax, Payne Haas and Gray are also said to be thinking about signing the new competition.

Eight major rugby union teams, including Australia, earlier imposed a prohibition on players joining R360 appearing in test matches.

“We've listened to our teams and we've responded strongly,” commented ARLC head Peter V'Landys.

“Sadly, there will always be groups that seek to pirate our code for monetary profit.

“They don't invest in talent pipelines or the advancement of athletes. They merely capitalize on the hard work of other organizations, putting players at risk of monetary damage while gaining personally.

“Essentially, they are, imitating the sport.”

The organization is launched by former England World Cup winner Tindall and supported by private investors.

Subsequent to the possible rugby union sanctions were declared recently, it commented: “We aim to collaborate in partnership as part of the international rugby schedule.

“The event is structured with customized calendars for male and female sides and the organization will permit participants for test matches, as included in their agreements.”

The new league will seek approval for its initiatives from the international authority, rugby union's governing body, at its council meeting in the coming year.
