The 'Breaking Bad' Creator Shares He Has a Plan for How The Apple TV+ Show Might Finish... At the Moment.
Vince Gilligan never anticipated that his new science-fiction series would emerge as a massive hit. “I am so grateful to the audience,” Gilligan says. “I was surprised by the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”
With the first season of the popular series coming to an end—and Season 2 greenlit and underway—the creative team opened up about the audience reaction and whether it will impact the narrative path of Pluribus.
On the Tremendous Fan Response
Anyone might to get distracted by the constant speculation and audience predictions about Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is striving to avoid both.
“The experience is akin to an endless supply of hot fudge sundaes and being laughing uncontrollably,” he describes. “It's wonderful, but I learn of it through word of mouth, and that's intentional. I have never looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever want to. It's quite the opposite. It's a bottomless pit I know I would fall into and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from the hardware store and I'd never leave my living room.”
Despite trying to stay away, there’s no way to avoid the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it alter the course of the show.
“We make no attempt to tailor anything,” says Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not impacted by what people are saying.”
“We prefer to keep our noses to the grindstone,” Gilligan adds.
The Central Mystery: Does the showrunner Know the Finale of Pluribus?
Given that the creative staff aren’t being guided by fan response, does that mean they already know how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? In short yes… sort of.
“We have some compelling concepts about how the story could conclude,” he states. “but we are always ready to abandon a solid concept for a better idea. That has held us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we conceive of something superior and I expect we'll continue doing that.”
Then again, if all else fails, executive producer Gordon Smith has a rather amusing idea to use as a backup.
“I constantly suggest that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and the characters are inside it,” he says humorously, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”
Of course, why mess with the iconic TV endings?
“I want Carol to awaken next to Bob Newhart,” Gilligan adds, smiling.
Pluribus can be watched on the streaming service.
