The network's Premier New Show of This Year Secures a Substantial Extension for Seasons 2 and 3.

In October of last year, the late-night programming block saw the return of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. However, later that same month, the channel introduced a brand-new animated series with a markedly softer feel. Haha, You Clowns proved to be sweet and soothing, in the spirit of a animated take of a laid-back talk show. At a time often marked by bleakness, this show's earnestness struck a chord and helped it become a surprise hit.

A Significant Investment

In mid-December, the network made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for a further two seasons. This offers creator Joe Cappa ample opportunity to develop the world of the Campbell family. The series centers on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose defining trait is their deep love for their single father, with Cappa voicing for all four main characters.

"I am incredibly thankful to the fans of the show who welcomed the series and spread the word," said Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for seasons to come."

Network Praise

Accompanying the news commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and strangely uncanny." He shouted out the fans who discovered the show and championed its peculiarly charming style.

"All of you supported this new show, rooted for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Different Kind of Comedy

When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a gentle counterpart" to more cynical adult animated fare. There’s something surprisingly comfy about observing this charming family navigate their simple existence.

Previously, creator Joe Cappa shared his hope to help comedy break out of its prevailing sarcastic tone. He traced this trend to various cultural shifts.

“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we keep returning to,” explained Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we need to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”

The Path Forward

Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa could potentially help usher in that very evolution. If nothing else, the renewal ensures audiences more opportunities to experience the heartfelt moments of the unique Campbell clan.

The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The complete first season is currently streaming on HBO Max.
