The people of Israel mark second remembrance of 7 October attacks as Palestinian ceasefire talks advance
Israelis have gathered throughout the country to commemorate 24 months since the Hamas-initiated offensive on that fateful day in October 2023, as talks advanced in the neighboring country over a conclusion to the hostilities in Gaza.
The incident resulted in in excess of 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others taken back to Gaza as captives. It was the most most fatal day for the Jewish community since the Second World War.
Israel responded by beginning a military offensive in Gaza which has taken more than 67,000 people, according to the region's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its statistics are considered reliable by the United Nations and other global organizations.
"Our bloodthirsty adversaries have struck forcefully, but they have not broken us," the prime minister added on that day.
He also vowed to "achieve all the objectives of the war: the homecoming of all the abducted, the removal of the Hamas government and the promise that Gaza will no longer present a threat to Israel".
Commemorative Gatherings Across Israel
The Israeli government postponed official commemorations until 16 October - after the end of the Jewish High Holiday season - but gatherings still were held across the country on that day.
A memorial ceremony for the families of people who died in the Hamas assault was held in Tel Aviv. Organized by the victims' relatives, it was aired throughout Israeli TV networks.
Hours earlier, a moment of silence was held around the country.
Negotiation Talks in Egypt
Meanwhile, the conflicting parties' negotiating teams convened in the North African tourist destination of the negotiation venue for a second day of mediated discussions to examine the provisions of the agreement.
A prominent representative involved in the negotiations revealed that an evening round of mediated discussions commenced at 7 PM local time.
The official explained the earlier meeting ended without concrete outcomes, due to disagreements over the recommended Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas wants to guarantee Israel does not recommence fighting after the initial stage of the agreement.
He added that the negotiations are "difficult and have yet to achieve any major advancement," but pointed out that mediators are making efforts to narrow the disparities between the both parties.
Critical Matters in Talks
- An enduring ceasefire
- The swap of the captives still detained by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
- The pullout of Israeli forces from Gaza
- Measures for relief supplies deliveries
- After-conflict administration of the area
Civilian Sentiment
In Tel Aviv's public square that day, young Hagar - whose sibling survived the incident on the Nova music festival, where hundreds were murdered and numerous more were taken hostage by Hamas militants - told: "No location seems like home anymore and until each abducted person are released no one will have peace of mind."
"Once we see everyone home returned, we can relax again. Then we can commence rebuild," she concluded.
Near the prime minister's official dwelling in Jerusalem, people gathered to show their solidarity for the loved ones of the captives. Israel says nearly fifty continue in detention in Gaza, 20 of whom are thought to be living.
Protester Atalia Regev stated: "We need do every compromise necessary for the abducted to come back home. But we sincerely need assurances that we will be secure."
Research now consistently show that around seventy percent of Israelis desire the war to finish in exchange for the release of the captives.
Gaza Situation
At the area of the music event, grieving people assembled to remember the victims.
From the site, the sound of Israeli air strikes and shelling could be detected just a short distance away in Gaza, where observers reported the heavy Israeli shelling persisted.
In the urban center, attacks were reported in the dawn of that day in the western neighborhood, area and locality districts and in the east side neighbourhood of the community, as well the settlement to the northwestern area.
"Once the dusk arrives, the dread comes with it," evacuated urban resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose 17-year-old son was died by an Israeli bombing earlier, explained.
"Me and my three children are afraid of the bombings. During nighttime we are resting together, holding each other, particularly my little child who places his head on me throughout the night."
"Every second we look at the reports to see the situation. And I'm afraid that this ceasefire will not be achieved and that the war will return to us."
Health Crisis
The healthcare center in Gaza City said it had taken in the bodies of six people by the daytime, including a trio who died in an Israeli strike in the southern district.
Nasser hospital in the southern city of Khan Younis reported additional dead people had been brought there. A person was killed by Israeli soldiers while looking for help to the southern area, health workers stated.
