Extreme heat and intense bushfires have devastated the dry landscape of Western Australia. As temperatures forecast to continue soaring above 40C (104F) over the next few days, a major alert for extreme heat has been issued across much of the south-west.

Broad Extreme Heat Alerts Throughout the Region

These conditions follow this month's bushfires in New South Wales, which resulted in the destruction of homes and fatalities. Severe heat alerts have additionally been activated for the coming days in parts of SA and New South Wales, as a ridge of high pressure moves eastward, bringing intense heat to a broad swath of the area.

The mix of extremely dry vegetation and unbroken heat creates a dangerous situation for firefighters.

Worldwide Climatic Events Trigger Chaos

In another part of the world, a major city was plunged into darkness last week after powerful winds compromised the city’s power grid, with falling trees bringing down electricity cables. The weather conditions also led to major travel disruption at a key airport, where numerous flights were grounded. Substantial impact on power systems is expected to create ongoing issues as utility companies work urgently to reconnect electricity to over 1 million residents.

Unusual Mist Blankets Sunny Region

Meanwhile, a valley famed for its sunny weather and plentiful sunlight has experienced one of its dullest and most overcast weeks on recorded history. A particular form of fog, which typically lingers for only a few days, has been unusually widespread and long-lasting this year, keeping the mercury at a key transport hub under 8C for more than a week – the longest such streak in over three decades. The extended fog has been fuelled by unprecedented fall rainfall that left soils saturated.

Severe Weather Brings Snow to Tourist Islands

And in another country, a weather system has ushered in intense rainfall, powerful gales and even snowfall to a group of islands – conditions many would not associate with this favored tourist spot. While wintry precipitation is not unheard of at higher ground, the storm delivered some of the deepest snow depths since 2016 to a national park, forcing its temporary shutdown.

In addition to the snowfall, fierce northerly winds swept across the island chain, with wind gusts exceeding 50mph recorded on several locations. The effect of the storm is forecast to ease this week with more seasonal weather returning.
